Neat!!
After my time with the nexus series I just looked for the next best thing and mind reader promised to be something neat. But after starting the book I was fastly dissapointed... not necessarily by the story but by the writing. It felt like the book was written in a fast manor and used a pretty typical (old school) story. Rogue agent helps helpless little girl and is basically invincible. Additionally it felt like the story had a few element that werent really researched / thought out.
Spoiler
It is mentioned that Rachel was drugged to sleep talk and that its a common interogation drug but its missing any information about the drug itself, only the smell and color is described. I dont want instruction on how to use it but I really dont like not knowing if such substances exist so I have to look it up my self and that breaks immersion for me. Ramez Naam always tried to be as precise as possible with the descriptions and also added a whole chapter which states the scientific basis on which he built his story. Patrick Lee only states a bunch of things but I cant really trust him because I dont know if anything is true.I feel like his book falls between the categories of fantasy and sci-fi which isnt something good. You dont know if any of the mentioned facts are actual facts but also dont feel like your in a fantasy world. Maybe I am still biased by Nexus or to amazed by the fourth wing series but mind reader was more of a drag for me. I will give Sam Dryden another chance with Signal and the third book but I am not to hopeful, as Signal already starts pretty rough.
